Chapter Twenty-Four

Caid pulled Jemma in and kissed her deeply. No matter how many weeks passed, the buzz he felt in her presence didn’t wear down. If anything, it only increased.

“You ready for this?” he asked her as she shoved another door stopper into her bag.

“I am. You?”

He nodded. Behind them, Celeste’s motorcycle came to a stop in the parking lot beside the precinct, followed closely by Harley’s Jeep. At Norah’s insistence, they’d taken her straight to Gerry and Marissa’s for Marissa to patch up her wound.

Being in a hospital was nearly as dangerous—if not more so—than being in a holding cell.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“This could be a career ender for you, Caid. Are you prepared for that?”

“I am. Zach doesn’t deserve to go down for this, and he certainly doesn’t deserve to end up gutted like Matthews or—”

“Charmont?” Jemma smiled. “I don’t consider him my father, Caid, you can say his name.”

“I just want to be sure you’re okay with the risk.”

“I want to stop bad people,” she said easily. “At any cost.”

“Not any cost,” he said darkly. “I won’t ever risk you.”

Jemma smiled softly and reached up to cup his face. “You never have to. We’re in this together.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

He gripped the back of her neck and pulled her in again, the feel of her lips against his familiar and intoxicating.

“Don’t get arrested,” she whispered against his mouth. “I have other plans for you later.”

Caid grinned and kissed her one more time. “Same to you.”

Opening the driver’s side door, Caid climbed out into the frigid Seattle air. It was freezing tonight, rain falling steadily down on them.

Celeste was the first to reach them, the black suit she’d purchased while Harley had been dropping Norah off with Gerry a perfect match for the FBI persona she needed to portray in order for them both to make it past the front door.

Shit. If they made it past the front door. According to Harley, the cameras monitoring the outside of the precinct didn’t reach out here, but he still found himself checking for surveillance. One false move and they’d all end up behind bars.

“Norah okay?”

“She’s good. Bullet went straight through, so Marissa patched her up, and she’s ready to assist digitally. By the way, Gerry said one call and he’ll come out of retirement to join us.”

Caid smiled. You could retire the mercenary, but you could never take the fight out of them. “Let’s hope we won’t need him.” Turning to Jemma, he folded his arms. The plan hinged on her and Norah.

They were the two lynch pins holding the entire thing together. “You ready?” he asked.

“I was born ready.” She winked and held up the black duffel. “Thanks to Celeste and her bag of tricks.”

“Don’t risk bolting it,” Celeste added. “Just sticky tape and go. We don’t need it to hold forever.”

“You got it.”

“Block all the doors except the attic and fourth floor,” Caid told her. “Then get the hell out of there.”

“Don’t worry about it, Liza has this covered.
